Thumbs up for Chinese Puxian Opera

On September 12nd, a large series of live streams “Hello, New China-Chinese Opera, Pick Me” organized by Mobile Management Bureau, Showself Entertainment, and Guangming.com launched a special show about Puxian opera.

Wonderful Puxian opera inherit the culture

Puxian opera is developed and formed on the basis of "100 operas". It originated in the Tang dynasty, strong in the Song dynasty, flourished in the Ming and Qing dynasties, and reached a peak in modern times. The performance is simple and elegant and was heavily influenced by puppet shows. It has a special singing style and integrates the artistic features of Puxian folk songs and ballads. Using the local dialect and keeping different music elements from Song and Yuan dynasty, so-called “ancient living-fossil”. 

During the live stream, Wang Shaoyuan, the secretary of Puxian opera theater, also a nation-wide renowned actor introduced the history and artistic features of Puxian opera to audiences enthusiastically. Before the play started, the host walked into the studio to show audiences some special musical instruments that only can be seen in Puxian opera.

The leading actor in the play “Walking Under the Umbrella” also joined the live stream. l. It has been ten years since he started learning Puxian opera in the school at the age of 17. Although he has become a most important member of the troupe, he still feels shy when facing live cameras. He said, "I hope more people will pay more attention to our Puxian opera".

When live stream meets opera, it blooms

Puxian opera is simple and elegant. It has more than one thousand songs which are classified by different scenarios. It is uncommon in the Chinese opera that each song or chant is accompanied by two or three or more performances. Gongs and drums are needed in the performance and the process is rigorous. Because of the antiquity, richness, and uniqueness of the repertoire, Puxian opera has a special and diverse form of stage performance. The basic part of the performance focuses on movement of the actors; requiring them to be exquisite, skilled, and experienced. During the live stream, two actors, Zheng Renseng and Ma Yanyu showed audiences a short performance of the Puxian opera, which was performed in Southern dialect. Audiences can guess the content of the drama through their vivid performance.
